Feeding

Just been feeding and not breaking much ice the last couple days. Its been so warm here there is barely any ice on the waters. Heres a couple shots of the yearling replacement heifers. Mobbing me looking for cake and hay, More cake than hay.
This little girl figured out where the cake comes out.
If you look you can see some green paint in the baldy heifers right ear. Its where she got her Bangs tattoo about a month ago.

Cake Feeder

We got a cake feeder the other day from a neighbor. So now we can feed hay and cake from the same truck.
Better shot of the feeder.
Full of cake. Ready to go feed the beasty's.

Feeding

Not much has been going on here lately. Just feeding cows and breaking ice on water. The weather has been really weird. One day the high's are in the 20's with 30-40 mph winds, and the next day we are in the high 40's. It's got to be hard on the cows.
I've been in weird mood lately. Don't know if it's the winter blues or what. That's part of the reason I haven't posted in a while. I really do like doing this blog. Sometime's I get into my head and have a hard time getting out of it. I'm still getting trying to get a handle on ranch work and everything that goes with it. I love my job but I wonder if I'll ever it get it figured out. There is so much to learn that I let it over whelm me some times. I need to learn one day at a time.
This morning when I went to get hay I disturbed these critters breakfast. And yes they are standing on the bales.
Here's a sunset from the other night.

This week's Sunday Stills is corner's. I know its been awhile since I've done a Sunday stills. I really enjoy doing them. I had fun doing this week.

Corner of an old building.

The corner of the back yard.

Here's lots of corners. The roof of the shop.

Fence around our well.

Trimmed Horse

It is a really nice day today. I got Rollers feet trimmed. He is a pretty easy horse to trim. Here's his front feet.
 Finished front feet.
Me putting the finishing touches on his feet.

Friday the 13th

Fed cows today, broke the ice on waters. Worked in the shop this afternoon. We are organizing the Fuel/Tool truck. I turned the welder around and made a frame for it. Now it is easier to start and we can adjust the temperature easier.
The weather is supposed to be in the high 40's low 50's. So I might trim Rollers feet tomorrow. Sounds like a good day for that kind of work.
Snapped this shot feeding the cows. I was waiting for them to catch up. I was moving them down to water with the hay truck.
This is looking to the east.

Update

Saturday we went to Casper to do the monthly grocery shopping. On the way over we stopped at the main HQ and I loaded up a couple bags of oats for Roller. Showed Sharon a little more of the ranch. We didn't make it to the hunting lodge. Maybe another trip.
It was a really nice day. We went out for Thai food and just enjoyed being together. Then we went to a yarn shop. Sharon spent almost 2 hrs there. It is really cool to see her so happy and excited. I almost took a little nap there but every time I would nod off she would ask what I thought about some thing. We then went to the Sportsmans Warehouse and we both got a new pair of shoes. I got a nice pair of slip-ons. Then off to Wal-Mart. Yuck but all your shopping needs under one roof. Then home.
Sunday we just hungout did a little reading and watched some movies. Real mellow day.
On the work front just been feeding cows. We had a leak in a water pipe we fixed on Monday and Tuesday. We had really warm weather so we could dig it up. The ground wasn't froze solid.
Here's the sunset from last night.
I really like this shot.

Chicken story

So I have a saying "Does a one legged duck swim in a circle" when the the answer is yes. So I said that to Sharon and she said I don't get it.. Whats to get...hehe.  Which brings us the chicken story. So when I was a kid we had chickens. And we had  problem one time with raccoons getting in the chickens looking for a free meal I suppose. So we called our local hunter/trapper who later became my hunting mentor. His name is Eldon. So he sets the trap I think we got one raccoon. But alas we start missing chickens again. Eldon comes back and sets another trap. This time Goldy one of our chickens get's out and get her leg snapped off in the trap. My brother and I try to make things better with our one legged chicken by making a leg for her out of an old corn cob. We tried tying it on, taping and any other way to hold it on. It never stayed. Ol' Goldy lived a long time with one leg. She would get in fights and hold her leg out in front of her and peck the other chickens over it. Her using her leg as a club. Pretty darn funny.  Ahh a just a childhood memory. Here's a sunrise from this morning.

New Year Poem

The follow poem was written by a friend of mine. I really enjoyed the poem and wanted to share it. I first met JB online on a ranching forum. Then met JB in person at the Devil's Tower Cowboy Poetry Festival.  Here's a link to JB's blog Dennisranch. Enjoy!

New Year
Two thousand eleven is in the books
We can look back now at it’s dips and crooks
Like a winding road we’ve traveled on
We can see real clear just where we’ve gone
We can look ahead at where we’re goin’
Maybe help ourselves to keep on growin’
Learn from past mistakes we made
Maybe this year we’ll make a better trade
Take all this time that we’ve been givin’
and swap it for some better livin’
Cuz’ we each only get so many days
Maybe it’s time some change their ways
I’ve taken a vow to do my best
To do a better job upon this quest
To live life better each and every day
Treat folks with kindness along the way
Learn from the mistakes I made last year
So lets raise us a cup and have a cheer
May the cold wind always be at your back
Your horse always traveling on the right track
May your calves get fat and sell real high
May the rains come right and you ain’t never dry
May your loop always fit and good luck at your side
May your horse never buck more than you can ride
